Create systems that work for you

The quality of our life depends on the systems we have put into place. As James Clear writes in his book Atomic Habits, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” And if our systems aren’t working for us, we may never rise.

What exactly is a system, you ask? A system is a set of intentional habits, routines, or processes that achieves a specific goal or outcome. It is a structured approach to managing tasks or activities that can improve efficiency, productivity, and overall well-being. For instance, it’s the list of items you jot down you need from the grocery store before you head out to the shops. You’ve improved your efficiency by not forgetting the milk; you’ve improved your productivity by not standing in the dairy section wondering what it was you were to pick up; and you’ve improved your well-being because you are less apt to buy random baked goods with your list in front of you. If you write your grocery list regularly, you have created a system. One that works for you.

Systems can be a powerful tool in setting ourselves up for success, both in our business and in our every day life. By developing intentional habits and routines, we can simplify our life and reduce stress, giving us more time and energy to focus on what truly matters.

Whether it’s creating a morning routine that includes exercise, meditation, and healthy breakfast options, or creating a process for managing our finances or household chores, we can be more productive and efficient when we establish systems that help us reach our goals.

Systems can also help us overcome procrastination and stay focused on the tasks that matter the most. For example, breaking larger projects into smaller, more manageable tasks, and creating a schedule for completing them can help us stay motivated and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Systems can also improve our overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care and incorporating activities that bring us joy, we can cultivate a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Whether we’re looking to improve our productivity, reduce stress, or enhance our well-being, we can set ourselves up for success by creating systems that work for us.

Tips to keep in mind when creating systems for success:

Start small and be consistent:

When setting up a new system, it’s important to start with small, achievable goals and to be consistent in following through with them. For example, if you’re trying to establish a morning routine, start with just one or two activities that you can realistically commit to doing every day, and gradually add more as you become more comfortable with the routine.

Consistency is key in establishing new habits, so try to stick to your new system even on days when you don’t feel like it.

Evaluate and adjust as needed:

Systems are not set in stone and may need to be adjusted. Regularly evaluate your system to see what’s working and what’s not, and make adjustments accordingly. For example, if you find that a certain activity in your morning routine is not energizing you, try swapping it out for something else. Or, if you’re not making progress on a particular task, reassess your approach and consider trying a different strategy. The key is to remain flexible and willing to change in order to achieve your desired outcomes.
